Transformation of Sentences (বাক্য রূপান্তর)
Transformation কী?
Sentence transformation হলো মূল অর্থ অক্ষুণ্ণ রেখে sentence-এর grammatical form বা structure পরিবর্তন করা।
- He is too weak to walk.
- He is so weak that he cannot walk.
Form আলাদা হলেও central meaning একই। Transformation-এ tense, person, number, logical relation এবং emphasis যেন অনিচ্ছাকৃতভাবে না বদলে যায়।
Simple, Compound and Complex
Simple Sentence
একটি independent finite clause থাকে। Non-finite phrase থাকতে পারে।
- Being tired, he went to bed.
Compound Sentence
দুটি বা ততোধিক independent clause coordinator দিয়ে যুক্ত।
- He was tired, so he went to bed.
Complex Sentence
একটি main clause এবং অন্তত একটি subordinate clause।
- As he was tired, he went to bed.
তিন form-এর logical relationship—cause, contrast, time, condition বা result—একই রাখতে হবে।
Simple → Complex
Participle to Adverb Clause
- Seeing the police, the thief ran away.
- When the thief saw the police, he ran away.
- Being ill, she stayed home.
- As she was ill, she stayed home.
Perfect Participle to Time/Cause Clause
- Having completed the work, she went home.
- After she had completed the work, she went home.
Infinitive of Purpose to Purpose Clause
- He works hard to succeed.
- He works hard so that he may succeed.
Prepositional Phrase to Clause
- In spite of his poverty, he is honest.
- Although he is poor, he is honest.
- Because of the rain, the match was cancelled.
- Because it rained, the match was cancelled.
Noun Phrase to Noun Clause
- I know his birthplace.
- I know where he was born.
Complex → Simple
Adverb Clause to Participle
Subject একই হলে reduction সম্ভব:
- When she saw the teacher, she stopped talking.
- Seeing the teacher, she stopped talking.
Cause Clause to Phrase
- As he was ill, he could not attend.
- Being ill, he could not attend.
- Because of his illness, he could not attend.
Concession Clause to Phrase
- Although he was poor, he was honest.
- In spite of being poor, he was honest.
- Despite his poverty, he was honest.
Relative Clause Reduction
- The girl who is wearing a blue dress is my sister.
- The girl wearing a blue dress is my sister.
- The books that were published last year are useful.
- The books published last year are useful.
Compound → Complex
Coordinator-এর logical meaning অনুযায়ী subordinator নির্বাচন করুন।
And showing sequence
- He finished the work, and he went home.
- After he had finished the work, he went home.
So showing result
- It was raining, so we stayed home.
- We stayed home because it was raining.
But/Yet showing contrast
- He is poor, but he is honest.
- Although he is poor, he is honest.
Or showing condition
- Hurry up, or you will miss the bus.
- If you do not hurry, you will miss the bus.
- Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus.
Complex → Compound
- Although she was tired, she continued working.
- She was tired, but she continued working.
- Because he worked hard, he succeeded.
- He worked hard, so he succeeded.
- If you study, you will pass.
- Study hard, and you will pass.
Affirmative and Negative Transformation
Meaning অপরিবর্তিত রাখতে opposite expression ব্যবহার করতে হয়।
- Everyone loves freedom.
- There is no one who does not love freedom.
- Only Rina answered correctly.
- None but Rina answered correctly.
- He is always punctual.
- He is never late.
- As soon as he arrived, it began to rain.
- No sooner had he arrived than it began to rain.
Double negative অনিচ্ছাকৃতভাবে meaning বদলে দিতে পারে।
Assertive and Interrogative
Rhetorical transformation-এ meaning ও polarity খেয়াল করতে হয়।
- Everyone loves freedom.
- Who does not love freedom?
- Nobody can deny this truth.
- Who can deny this truth?
- It is useless to argue.
- What is the use of arguing?
সব direct statement-কে question করলে সমার্থক হয় না; rhetorical meaning থাকতে হবে।
Assertive and Exclamatory
Very + adjective
- The flower is very beautiful.
- What a beautiful flower it is!
- She sings very beautifully.
- How beautifully she sings!
Great joy/sorrow
- We are very happy that we have won.
- Hurrah! We have won.
- It is very sad that he is dead.
- Alas! He is dead.
Exclamatory থেকে assertive করলে emotional intensity appropriate adverb দিয়ে প্রকাশ করতে হয়।
Imperative and Assertive
- Work hard.
- You should work hard.
- Please help me.
- You are requested to help me.
- Do not waste time.
- You should not waste time.
- Let us begin.
- We should begin.
Context অনুযায়ী command, request, advice বা proposal আলাদা করতে হবে।
Degree Transformation
Superlative → Comparative
- Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
- Everest is higher than any other mountain in the world.
Superlative → Positive
- Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
- No other mountain in the world is as high as Everest.
One of the + Superlative
- Kolkata is one of the largest cities in India.
- Kolkata is larger than most other cities in India.
- Very few cities in India are as large as Kolkata.
Comparative between two
- Rina is taller than Mina.
- Mina is not as tall as Rina.
Positive Equality
- Rina is as intelligent as Mina.
- Mina is not more intelligent than Rina.
Transformation-এ any other, most other, no other এবং very few যথাযথভাবে ব্যবহার করা জরুরি।
Too…to Transformation
Too…to → So…that…not
Past context:
- He was too weak to walk.
- He was so weak that he could not walk.
Too…to → Not…enough
- He is too weak to lift the box.
- He is not strong enough to lift the box.
Antonym নির্বাচন ঠিক হতে হবে।
So…that and Such…that
- The box was so heavy that I could not lift it.
- It was such a heavy box that I could not lift it.
Structure:
- so + adjective/adverb + that
- such + (a/an) + adjective + noun + that
Unless and If…not
- Unless you study, you will fail.
- If you do not study, you will fail.
Unless clause-এ আবার not ব্যবহার করবেন না।
- Incorrect: Unless you do not study…
As Soon As / No Sooner / Hardly
- As soon as he reached the station, the train left.
- No sooner had he reached the station than the train left.
- Hardly had he reached the station when the train left.
Pairs:
- no sooner…than
- hardly/scarcely…when
Initial negative expression-এ inversion হয়।
Despite/In Spite of and Although
- Despite the rain, they played.
- Although it was raining, they played.
- In spite of being tired, she worked.
- Although she was tired, she worked.
Despite-এর পরে of নয়; in spite-এর পরে of লাগে।
Without + Gerund and If…not
- Without working hard, you cannot succeed.
- If you do not work hard, you cannot succeed.
- By working hard, you can succeed.
- If you work hard, you can succeed.
Present Participle and Relative Clause
- The man standing at the gate is my uncle.
- The man who is standing at the gate is my uncle.
Past Participle and Passive Relative Clause
- The letter written by Rina was clear.
- The letter that was written by Rina was clear.
Nominalisation
Clause/verb-কে noun phrase-এ বদলে simple structure তৈরি করা যায়।
- Because he was absent, the meeting was delayed.
- Because of his absence, the meeting was delayed.
- He failed because he was careless.
- He failed because of his carelessness.
Meaning natural আছে কি না পরীক্ষা করা জরুরি।
Changing Parts of Speech
- He succeeded because he worked diligently.
- His diligent work brought him success.
- She spoke confidently.
- She spoke with confidence.
এটি শুধু mechanical substitution নয়; collocation ও sentence grammar ঠিক রাখতে হবে।
Joining Sentences
With a participle
- He saw the police. He ran away.
- Seeing the police, he ran away.
With an infinitive
- He went to the market. He wanted to buy vegetables.
- He went to the market to buy vegetables.
With a relative clause
- I met a girl. She had won the prize.
- I met a girl who had won the prize.
With coordination
- He tried hard. He failed.
- He tried hard, but he failed.
Splitting Sentences
একটি complex/compound sentence-কে ছোট simple sentences-এ ভাগ করলেও pronoun reference ও time relation বজায় রাখতে হবে।
- When the bell rang, the students closed their books and left the room.
- The bell rang. The students closed their books. Then they left the room.
Common Errors
- Incorrect: Although he was poor, but he was honest.
Correct: Although he was poor, he was honest.
- Incorrect: Because he was ill, so he stayed home.
Correct: Because he was ill, he stayed home.
- Incorrect: No sooner had he arrived when it rained.
Correct: No sooner had he arrived than it rained.
- Incorrect: Hardly had I sat down than the bell rang.
Correct: Hardly had I sat down when the bell rang.
- Incorrect: Everest is higher than all mountains.
Correct: Everest is higher than any other mountain.
- Incorrect: He is too weak that he cannot walk.
Correct: He is so weak that he cannot walk.
Correct: He is too weak to walk.
- Incorrect: Despite of the rain, we played.
Correct: Despite the rain, we played.
Meaning-preservation Checklist
- Original sentence-এর core proposition লিখুন।
- Cause, result, contrast, time, condition বা comparison শনাক্ত করুন।
- Subject ও action-এর doer অপরিবর্তিত রাখুন।
- Tense এবং sequence ঠিক রাখুন।
- Negative বা degree transformation-এ polarity বদলেছে কি না দেখুন।
- New connector-এর required structure ব্যবহার করুন।
- Final sentence স্বাভাবিক ও grammatically complete কি না পড়ে দেখুন।
