Modal Auxiliary Verbs (ভাবসূচক সাহায্যকারী ক্রিয়া)

Modal Verb কী?

Modal auxiliary মূল verb-এর সঙ্গে ability, permission, possibility, probability, obligation, advice, willingness, request বা deduction-এর মতো অর্থ যোগ করে।

প্রধান modals: can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, ought to। Semi-modals: need, dare, used to, have to, be able to, be supposed to

Basic Structure

Modal + base verb (V1):

  • She can sing.
  • You should study.
  • They may come.

Modal person বা number অনুযায়ী বদলায় না:

  • I can swim.
  • He can swim.
  • They can swim.

সাধারণ modal-এর পরে to বা -s বসে না:

  • Incorrect: He can to swim/sings.
  • Correct: He can swim/sing.

Negative and Question

Modal-এর পরেই not; প্রশ্নে modal subject-এর আগে।

  • She cannot come.
  • You should not worry.
  • Can she come?
  • Should we begin?

Do/does/did ব্যবহার হয় না:

  • Incorrect: Does he can swim?
  • Correct: Can he swim?

Can

Present ability

  • She can speak English.

Informal permission

  • Can I use your pen?

General possibility

  • Accidents can happen.

Request

  • Can you help me?

Cannot/can't strong impossibility বা prohibition-ও বোঝাতে পারে:

  • That cannot be true.
  • You cannot enter this room.

Could

General past ability

  • She could read at the age of five.

একটি নির্দিষ্ট past achievement-এর ক্ষেত্রে was/were able to বেশি স্বাভাবিক:

  • The door was locked, but we were able to open it.

Polite request/permission

  • Could you please help me?
  • Could I ask a question?

Less certain possibility

  • It could rain tonight.

Unreal ability

  • If I had more time, I could learn another language.

May

Formal permission

  • May I come in?

Possibility

  • She may arrive today.

Wish

  • May you succeed!
  • May God bless you!

Purpose in formal structures

  • Work hard so that you may succeed.

Might

কম নিশ্চয়তার possibility বা reported form:

  • She might come later.
  • He said that he might be late.

May এবং might-এর certainty সব context-এ নির্দিষ্ট percentage নয়; might সাধারণত বেশি tentative।

Shall

Modern English-এ প্রধানত offer, suggestion এবং formal requirement।

  • Shall I open the window? — offer
  • Shall we begin? — suggestion
  • The applicant shall submit the form by Friday. — formal rule

Simple future-এ will সব person-এর সঙ্গে সাধারণ।

Should

Advice or duty

  • You should revise regularly.

Expectation/probability

  • The train should arrive soon.

Formal that-clause

  • It is important that every student should participate.

Conditional inversion

  • Should you need help, call me.

Will

Future prediction/fact

  • It will rain tomorrow.

Instant decision

  • I will answer the phone.

Promise or willingness

  • I will help you.

Habit/characteristic

  • He will often sit there for hours.
  • Oil will float on water.

Would

Polite request/offer

  • Would you help me?
  • Would you like some tea?

Future in the past

  • He said he would return.

Repeated past action

  • Every evening, my grandfather would tell stories.

Unreal/conditional result

  • I would travel more if I had time.

Preference

  • I would rather stay home.

Would-এর পরে base verb; would rather-এর পরেও base verb।

Must

Strong obligation

  • You must obey the rules.

Speaker-imposed necessity

  • I must finish this today.

Strong deduction

  • The lights are on; they must be home.

Prohibition

  • You must not smoke here.

Mustn't = নিষেধ; needn't = প্রয়োজন নেই। এরা এক নয়।

Have to

External rule বা practical necessity:

  • We have to wear uniforms.
  • She had to leave early.

Must-এর সাধারণ past form হিসেবে had to ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Negative difference

  • You mustn't go. — যাওয়া নিষেধ
  • You don't have to go. — যাওয়ার দরকার নেই

Ought to

Moral duty, advice বা expected situation:

  • We ought to respect others.
  • The bus ought to arrive soon.

Ought-এর পরে to + V1 হয়।

Need

Main verb

  • She needs to study.
  • She does not need to study tonight.

Modal use

প্রধানত question ও negative-এ:

  • Need I explain further?
  • You need not worry.

Needn't-এর পরে base verb।

Dare

Main verb বা modal—দুইভাবে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে।

  • He does not dare to speak. — main verb
  • He dare not speak. — modal use
  • How dare you say that?

Used to

Past habit বা state যা এখন আর নেই:

  • I used to live in Kolkata.
  • She used to be shy.

Negative/question-এর পরীক্ষাভিত্তিক standard form:

  • Did you use to play here?
  • I did not use to like tea.

Be Used to and Get Used to

এগুলি modal নয়; এখানে to preposition, তাই noun/gerund বসে।

  • I am used to waking early. — অভ্যস্ত
  • She is getting used to living alone. — অভ্যস্ত হয়ে উঠছে

Compare:

  • I used to wake early. — former habit
  • I am used to waking early. — accustomed now

Be Able to

Can-এর বিকল্প; বিভিন্ন tense ও infinitive form তৈরি করতে পারে।

  • She will be able to join us.
  • I have been able to solve it.
  • He wants to be able to speak fluently.

Had Better

Strong advice বা warning:

  • You had better leave now.
  • You had better not ignore the warning.

Had better-এর পরে base verb; past form হলেও present/future advice বোঝায়।

Would Rather

Preference:

  • I would rather stay home.
  • She would rather read than watch television.

Different subject হলে past form:

  • I would rather you stayed here.

Modal + Be + V-ing

Present/future continuous deduction বা possibility:

  • She may be sleeping.
  • They must be waiting.

Modal + Have + V3

Past সম্পর্কে possibility, deduction, criticism বা unreal result।

Must have + V3

Strong past deduction:

  • She must have forgotten the meeting.

May/Might/Could have + V3

Past possibility:

  • He may have missed the bus.
  • They might have taken another road.

Cannot/Could not have + V3

Past impossibility:

  • She cannot have written this letter.

Should/Ought to have + V3

কাজ করা উচিত ছিল কিন্তু হয়নি; criticism/regret।

  • You should have informed me.

Needn't have + V3

কাজটি করা হয়েছিল কিন্তু দরকার ছিল না।

  • You needn't have bought food; we had enough.

Compare:

  • You didn't need to buy food. — কাজটি করা হয়েছিল কি না স্পষ্ট নয়
  • You needn't have bought food. — কিনেছিলে, কিন্তু দরকার ছিল না

Would have + V3

Unreal past result:

  • I would have helped if I had known.

Degrees of Certainty

Context অনুযায়ী সাধারণ scale:

  • must be = strong positive deduction
  • may/might/could be = possibility
  • can't be = strong negative deduction
  • She has practised all year; she must be prepared.
  • She is not answering; she may be busy.
  • He is abroad; he can't be in the office.

Permission: Can, Could and May

  • Can I…? — ordinary/informal
  • Could I…? — polite/tentative
  • May I…? — formal

Past general permission often could; particular permitted action often was/were allowed to

Advice: Should, Ought to, Had Better

  • should = ordinary advice
  • ought to = advice/moral duty
  • had better = strong advice with possible consequence
  • You should rest.
  • We ought to help the poor.
  • You had better see a doctor.

Requests: Politeness

  • Can you help me?
  • Could you help me?
  • Will you open the door?
  • Would you mind opening the door?

Would you mind-এর পরে gerund ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Common Errors

  • Incorrect: He can sings.

Correct: He can sing.

  • Incorrect: She may to come.

Correct: She may come.

  • Incorrect: You mustn't come if you do not want to.

Intended meaning: You needn't/don't have to come.

  • Incorrect: I am used to get up early.

Correct: I am used to getting up early.

  • Incorrect: You had better to leave.

Correct: You had better leave.

  • Incorrect: He should have went.

Correct: He should have gone.

  • Incorrect: She was able to sing when she was five, if meaning general ability.

More natural: She could sing when she was five.

A Reliable Solving Method

  1. Sentence ability, permission, advice, necessity, possibility না deduction—কোন meaning চায় তা নির্ধারণ করুন।
  2. Time present, past না future দেখুন।
  3. Modal-এর পরে V1, be + V-ing, be + V3 বা have + V3—কোন pattern দরকার দেখুন।
  4. Negative meaning prohibition না absence of necessity—পার্থক্য করুন।
  5. Formality ও politeness level দেখুন।
  6. Used to এবং be used to গুলিয়ে ফেলবেন না।
