Phrases and Clauses (Phrase ও Clause)
Phrase কী?
Definition: A phrase is a group of related words that functions as a unit but does not contain a complete subject–finite verb relationship.
বাংলা ব্যাখ্যা: একসঙ্গে একটি grammatical unit-এর কাজ করে কিন্তু পূর্ণ subject–finite verb সম্পর্ক থাকে না—এমন word group-কে Phrase বলে।
- in the morning
- a very intelligent student
- to complete the work
- walking along the road
Phrase সাধারণত একা complete sentence নয়।
Clause কী?
Definition: A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a finite verb.
- she arrived
- because it was raining
- who won the prize
Clause independent বা dependent হতে পারে।
Phrase ও Clause-এর পার্থক্য
- after the meeting — phrase; finite verb নেই
- after the meeting ended — clause; subject meeting, finite verb ended
- the boy in the room — phrase
- the boy who is in the room — relative clause
শুধু verb-like word থাকলেই clause নয়; finite verb আছে কি না দেখতে হবে।
প্রধান Phrase-গুলি
1. Noun Phrase
Noun-এর কাজ করে এবং head word সাধারণত noun/pronoun।
- The tall boy in the blue shirt is my brother.
- I bought a very useful book.
Noun phrase subject, object বা complement হতে পারে।
2. Adjective Phrase
Noun বা pronoun-কে বর্ণনা করে।
- The girl in the red dress is my sister.
- He is a man of great courage.
- The box is full of books.
Adjective phrase noun-এর পরে postmodifier বা linking verb-এর পরে complement হতে পারে।
3. Adverb Phrase
Verb, adjective, adverb বা sentence-কে modify করে; manner, time, place, reason বা degree বোঝায়।
- She spoke with great confidence.
- We shall meet in the evening.
- He answered very quickly.
4. Prepositional Phrase
Preposition + object + modifiers।
- on the table
- after the long meeting
- with great care
এটি adjective বা adverb function করতে পারে:
- The book on the table is mine. — adjective function
- Put the book on the table. — adverb function
5. Verb Phrase
Main verb-এর সঙ্গে auxiliary/modal মিলিয়ে verb phrase।
- has finished
- may have been waiting
- was being repaired
- The work may have been completed.
6. Infinitive Phrase
Infinitive এবং তার object/complement/modifier। Noun, adjective বা adverb function করতে পারে।
- To learn a language requires practice. — noun
- I have a lesson to prepare. — adjective
- She went to the library to study. — adverb of purpose
7. Gerund Phrase
Gerund + object/modifier; পুরো phrase noun-এর কাজ করে।
- Reading storybooks regularly improves vocabulary.
- She enjoys solving difficult problems.
8. Participial Phrase
Participle + complement/modifier; adjective function বা reduced clause হিসেবে কাজ করে।
- The girl wearing a blue dress is my sister.
- Shocked by the news, she remained silent.
- Having completed the work, he went home.
Phrase-এর implied subject main clause-এর subject-এর সঙ্গে মিলতে হবে।
9. Appositive Phrase
আগের noun-কে নতুন নামে চিহ্নিত বা ব্যাখ্যা করে।
- Rabindranath Tagore, a great poet, wrote Gitanjali.
- My friend Rina lives in Kolkata.
Non-essential appositive comma দিয়ে আলাদা হয়।
10. Absolute Phrase
নিজস্ব noun/pronoun এবং non-finite element থাকে, কিন্তু finite clause নয়; পুরো sentence-কে modify করে।
- The weather being fine, we went out.
- Her work completed, she went home.
Clause-এর শ্রেণি
Independent/Main Clause
Complete thought প্রকাশ করে এবং একা sentence হতে পারে।
- She stayed home.
- The rain stopped.
Dependent/Subordinate Clause
Subject ও finite verb থাকলেও একা complete sentence নয়।
- because she was ill
- when the bell rang
- who won the prize
Dependent clause-এর প্রধান তিন function: noun, adjective এবং adverb।
Noun Clause
Noun-এর কাজ করে। সাধারণ markers: that, whether, if, what, who, whom, whose, which, when, where, why, how।
Noun Clause as Subject
- What she said was true.
- Whether he will come is uncertain.
Noun Clause as Object
- I know that she is honest.
- Tell me where you live.
Noun Clause as Complement
- The truth is that we were late.
- The question is whether she will agree.
Noun Clause after Preposition
- It depends on what you decide.
- We talked about how the problem could be solved.
Indirect Question Word Order
Noun clause statement order অনুসরণ করে।
- Incorrect: I do not know where does he live.
- Correct: I do not know where he lives.
Question mark শুধু পুরো sentence প্রশ্ন হলে:
- Do you know where he lives?
- I wonder where he lives.
Adjective/Relative Clause
Noun বা pronoun-কে modify করে। Relative markers: who, whom, whose, which, that, where, when, why।
- The boy who won the prize is my brother.
- This is the book that I wanted.
- I remember the day when we met.
Who, Whom, Whose
- who = person, subject
- whom = person, object
- whose = possession
- The teacher who teaches us is kind.
- The man whom you met is a doctor.
- The girl whose bag was lost reported it.
Which and That
Which সাধারণত things/animals; that people বা things—বিশেষত defining clause-এ।
- The book which/that I bought is useful.
Preposition-এর ঠিক পরে that বসে না:
- the person to whom I spoke
- the person who/that I spoke to
Defining Relative Clause
Noun শনাক্ত করার জন্য জরুরি তথ্য; comma থাকে না।
- Students who work hard usually improve.
Non-defining Relative Clause
অতিরিক্ত তথ্য; comma দিয়ে আলাদা হয়। সাধারণত that ব্যবহার হয় না।
- My brother, who lives in Delhi, is a doctor.
Omission of Relative Pronoun
Object হলে defining clause-এ pronoun বাদ যেতে পারে:
- The book (that) I bought is useful.
Subject হলে বাদ যায় না:
- The boy who won is my friend.
Relative Clause Agreement
Verb antecedent অনুযায়ী হয়।
- She is one of the students who work hard.
- She is the only one who works hard.
Adverb Clause
Verb/main clause-কে time, place, reason, condition, purpose, result, contrast, manner বা comparison-এর তথ্য দেয়।
Time Clause
Markers: when, while, before, after, until, since, as soon as, whenever, once।
- Call me when you arrive.
- Wait until I return.
Future meaning থাকলেও time clause-এ সাধারণত present form:
- I will call when I arrive.
Place Clause
- Sit where you can see the board.
- I will follow you wherever you go.
Reason Clause
- We stayed home because it was raining.
- Since you are ready, we can begin.
Because-এর পরে clause; because of-এর পরে noun phrase।
Condition Clause
- If you study, you will succeed.
- You will fail unless you study.
Unless = if…not; unless clause-এ আবার not সাধারণত নয়।
Purpose Clause
- Speak clearly so that everyone can understand.
- He left early in order that he might catch the train.
Result Clause
- He was so tired that he could not walk.
- It was such a difficult question that nobody answered it.
Concession/Contrast Clause
- Although he was tired, he continued working.
- She smiled even though she was disappointed.
Although-এর সঙ্গে but একসঙ্গে নয়।
Comparison/Manner Clause
- She is taller than I am.
- He behaves as if he knew everything.
Finite and Non-finite Clauses
Finite clause
Tense-bearing verb আছে:
- because she was tired
Non-finite clause
Infinitive, -ing বা participle form থাকে:
- To finish the work, she stayed late.
- Walking home, she saw an accident.
- Defeated in the final, the team returned.
Traditional school grammar এগুলিকে phrase বলতে পারে; modern grammar-এ non-finite clause বলা হয়। Function বোঝাই মূল বিষয়।
Reduced Clauses
Relative Clause Reduction
- The girl who is wearing a blue dress → the girl wearing a blue dress
- The books that were published last year → the books published last year
Active → V-ing; passive/completed → V3।
Adverb Clause Reduction
Subject একই হলে:
- While she was walking home, she saw an accident.
- While walking home, she saw an accident.
- After he had completed the work, he left.
- Having completed the work, he left.
Dangling Modifier
Reduced phrase/clause-এর implied subject main clause-এর subject-এর সঙ্গে না মিললে error।
- Incorrect: Walking down the road, the trees looked beautiful.
- Correct: Walking down the road, I found the trees beautiful.
Coordination and Subordination
Coordination
সমান rank-এর clause: and, but, or, so, yet।
- She studied hard, and she passed.
Subordination
একটি clause অন্যটির উপর নির্ভরশীল:
- She passed because she studied hard.
এটি compound এবং complex sentence আলাদা করতে সাহায্য করে।
Common Errors
- Fragment: Because she was ill.
Complete: She stayed home because she was ill.
- Incorrect: I know where does she live.
Correct: I know where she lives.
- Incorrect: The boy which won is my friend.
Correct: The boy who won is my friend.
- Incorrect: My father, that lives in Kolkata, is a teacher.
Correct: My father, who lives in Kolkata, is a teacher.
- Incorrect: Although he was tired, but he continued.
Correct: Although he was tired, he continued.
- Incorrect: The man who I spoke was helpful.
Correct: The man to whom I spoke was helpful.
Correct: The man who I spoke to was helpful.
- Dangling: Having completed the work, the television was switched on.
Correct: Having completed the work, she switched on the television.
Identification Method
- Finite verb এবং তার subject খুঁজুন।
- Complete subject–finite verb relationship না থাকলে phrase/non-finite structure হতে পারে।
- Clause একা complete কি না নির্ধারণ করুন।
- Unitটি noun, adjective না adverb-এর কাজ করছে দেখুন।
- Relative word বা subordinator শনাক্ত করুন।
- Reduction হলে omitted subject/auxiliary পুনর্গঠন করুন।
